February Important Dates!

A SWEETHEART OF A DEAL!  Wednesday, Feb. 14th thru Wednesday, Feb. 29th.

Returned Overdue Book Fines are Free!

Like last year the library is running a sweetheart of a deal the last two weeks of February for those students who have an overdue, way overdue, or OMG overdue book from Basic that somehow you just spaced turning in over the last year or last few years.  Turn it in before the end of February and the library will forgive your entire fine on that book no matter how big the $$ of the fine is on it.

**  This does not include overdue books & textbooks from other schools that you might still have...  But if you bring them in we will be glad to send them back to your old school where the fine will be removed also.

All Library Book Fines Reduced by 2/3’s!

That’s right.  Already have a fine that you generated on a previously returned library book but just haven’t gotten around to paying for yet, well if you take care of that fine before the end of February we will reduce your fine by 2/3’s no matter how large your overdue book fine is at this time.   This does not apply to lost library or text books which we are required to recover the full cost of to replace.

PREREGISTRATION FOR THE 2012 - 2013 SCHOOL YEAR is now Open!

The window for doing your preregistration for classes next year is now open for you to begin planning your schedule for next year.

If you need help in preregistering for your classes next year please go to Basic High School’s webpage @ basichighschoool.com and scroll down and click on the link on the left side of the page that says “Preregistration” and follow the links based on what grade you will be in next year.  You can also view a pdf of the school’s course catalog which will explain the school’s expectations and has descriptions of the different course you will be required to take and the electives you might wish to take next year.  If you have questions about next year please contact your counselor using the Counselor Request form posted on the library’s homepage.

How to Preregister for next year  Before you begin the preregistration process you will need to know your Parentlink password.  If you do not have your password yet, you may get it from either the Mrs. Helland the school’s receptionist at the front desk or from Mrs. Bennion the counselor’s secretary.  The library DOES NOT have your Parentlink password.

Welcome back to a new year and the end of 1st semester.  Hopefully everyone  had a great Winter Break and is ready to get back at it and finish up the first half of the school year.  It's been a really busy first half of the year for the library.  Between classes booked into the library, before and after school, student visits during classtime and our new program - Lunch in the Library...  We're estimating that on many days we're having over or close to a 1,000 student visits per day.  Add in over 300 new fiction books that have been put out for "Hauntingly Great Reads" at Halloween and "Wrap up a Good Read for the Holidays" and things have been rocking in the library.

Columbus Day

Hmmm,  well I can see that I’m not very good at staying on top of updating this page on a regular basis and the whole blogging to the library’s web page thing.  Just too many activities going on in the library every day to take the time to sit down and put down a few thoughts, ideas or news items that relate to the library’s world.  Need to work on it.  With that said, here are the events going on @ Basic during the rest of October that are IMPORTANT to you:

The Second Week of School...

And we’re rolling!  I hope that everyone had a great 3-day weekend and is ready to hit it.  I think that we all needed those 3 days off to re-energize and get refocused for another great year at Basic.  After such a busy first week of school in the library where we were open to students from day one and there was so much going on at school last week, I’m hoping that things calm down a bit this week as we all get settled into our daily routines and get on with the task at hand which is:  learning.  Let’s make “Week 2” as great as the first week of school.

FYI’s:

  • Textbooks:  We checked out over 2,000 textbooks to students during the first 4 days of school.  If you still have a textbook checked out from last year, please return it ASAP - there is no late fee or fine for textbooks.
  • Lunch & Eating in the Library:  Yes you can have food and beverages in the library and come in and have your Lunch with us in the library.  But...  Remember - YOUR MOTHER DOESN’T WORK HERE AND WE HAVE NO MAID SERVICE - SO... CLEAN UP AFTERYOURSELVES AND DON’T RUIN IT FOR EVERYONE - thanks, drum
  • New Fiction Novels Coming:  I have brand new reads for you.  I had hoped to have them out last week when you returned for school, but with getting all of the new iMacs in the library up and running and the massive number of textbooks we checked out last week, I just couldn’t get the new novels finished up as planned.  My primary goal this week is to get new reads out on display for check out by this Friday - please be patient.
  • Overdue Library books & Fines:  A lot of you have library books still checked out from last year!  Those daily $ .10  fines are continuing to accrue.  We have a lot fines out there and let’s take care of those -  okay?  If you have a fine and know it, please come in and I’ll do a deal with you on your fine (if it’s a Basic generated fine) during the month of September and cut that fine by 50% as long as it’s not a lost library book.  Remember your library & textbook fines from other schools in CCSD follow you from school to school and I can help you take care of those and get them removed from your account.  Come see me.  drum

Greetings and Welcome Back & Let’s Roll!

It’s the first day of the 2011 - 2012 school year and I wanted to take a moment to welcome you back to your library.  I’d especially like to take this opportunity to welcome our newest wolves who make up the class of 2015 - You’re going to love being @ Basic and I hope, like so many other students @ Basic, you will make the library your home away from home.

While you all were rolling around the Vegas Valley enjoying your summer break and time away from school (I was too) a lot has been going on @ Basic - especially in your library.  First off every year I develop a theme for the current school year and this year it’s:  “Let’s Roll!”  Why this?  Because I think we’re on a roll @ Basic and we want to keep it going so that you have the best education that Nevada can offer.

What’s New?

New iMacs - Over the last two weeks we’ve rolled out 47 new iMacs to replace the old white eggs in the library that were our aging eMacs.  In the very near future we’ll also be replacing the 4 cranky old Dells that took forever to log onto the network.  Yes we’re a MAC library so learn to roll with it.  If you have a question about using our Macs - Just ask!  While the computers may be new, when you start using them it will look familiar and what’s different is that all the software is updated.

Color Printing - Finally you will have the option of printing your projects in color!  The default printing on all computers in the library is Black and White as it always had been and that’s now free.  If you want to print something in color you have to select that option in the print screen that comes up after selecting “print” and change the current printer to “lib-color” in the drop down menu.  But...  Color printing in the library is now $ .10 per page.  This will allow us to keep the black and white printing free and keep folks from running amok.  Need help printing in color - just ask!

New Library Homepage - The library’s new homepage was introduced late last Spring.  I opted to take all of the library’s resources off the district’s WAN (Wide Area Network) to allow you better access to our resources when you are outside of school and need to access something from school or do research on our databases (get the user I.D.’s and passwords to our databases from me) at home or the public library.  This new site is a work in progress, so please be patient with me.  Some things work well while others are struggling.  I’ll get them up to par ASAP.  I’ll be redesigning the “Talk to Me”, “Recommend a Book”, and “Look for a Book” pages.  They just don’t work right!  Bleh.

Site Retrofitting - As you can see there is new construction (in the library too) all over the building due to major new improvements being implemented at the school.  The district is using bond money to put an entire new technology suite into Basic High School.  This upgrade will impact every classroom and the library and includes new data drops and electrical plug-ins, new ceiling sound systems, new mounted projections units, new clocks and P.A. Systems, and many other things.  It’s all supposed to be done by Winter Break.  We need to be understanding and patient.

Wow!  It’s a lot and I’m sure that Drum has missed a lot to share with you, but hopefully once I get the new library blog up and running (that’s Talk to Me) I’ll better be able to share info and you’ll have the opportunity to comment back and make those suggestions.

So once again Welcome Back - Let’s have a GREAT Year and last but not least - “LET’S ROLL!”
